UN Adopts Ceasefire Resolution For Gaza

To put a stop to the continuous assault, the UN Security Council passed a resolution that called for an unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield says the vote is a positive step toward peace.

In favour of this decision, 14 members voted for the resolution, while Russia refrained. This shows that the resolution has strong packing. The three-phase proposal sets out an ongoing solution to the issue.

The quick halt of conflicts, the exchange of Palestinian prisoners, and the release of hostages are the primary goals of Phase One.

In addition to this, it demands that Israeli forces leave Gaza’s residential areas and allow Palestinians to return to their homes safely. At the same time, phase two aims to put an end to hostilities permanently, provided that Israel should free the last prisoners and withdraw entirely from Gaza.

Furthermore, phase three is to develop a comprehensive strategy for Gaza’s infrastructure and community treatment. The resolution stresses the significance of preserving Gaza’s current borders and rejects any moves that will change the territory’s demographic makeup.

It emphasizes the Security Council’s commitment to a two-state solution, wherein Israel and Palestine live side by side within internationally recognized borders. The resolution additionally emphasizes the necessity of uniting the West Bank and Gaza Strip under the Palestinian Authority.
