This week in China, temperatures are escalating, especially in the North and center and it seems like China bakes in heatwave. A severe drought in the east is threatening crops, which raises additional concerns about extreme weather across Asia this summer.
According to the state weather forecaster, northern Hebei province will experience highs of 43 degrees Celsius (107.6°F). The National Meteorological Centre (NMC) has alerted the public that high temperatures will impact agriculture productivity, energy supplies, and public health.

Since the beginning of the year, China has been experiencing hot weather, with the average high temperatures hitting record highs from March to May. Early in June, over 20 meteorological stations in Shandong and northern Hebei provinces reported record-high seasonal temperatures.
In addition, an extensive heat wave is impacting northern India, where temperatures reached above 50 degrees Celsius in late May. Since March, the nation has seen 56 deaths and close to 25,000 cases of heat stroke, according to the National Disease Control Center.

The extreme heat is part of a broader trend of extreme weather in Asia, wherein record-breaking heatwaves in April took many lives and caused extensive damage. Scientists connect human-caused climate change to these severe occurrences.
According to the NMC, the high temperatures will continue until June 20 in Northern China, with Hebei, Shanxi, and central Henan province likely exceeding previous records China bakes in heatwave. Mengyin County, Shandong, uses artificial rain and other methods to overcome a severe drought this year.
