NDMA has Issued Urgent Weather Alerts For July

The National Emergencies Operations Center (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has prepared a thorough monsoon forecast for July, which includes expected rainfall intensities and potential impacts throughout Pakistan. The rain is expected in the third week of July in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Mardan, Malakand, and Hazara Divisions; the fourth week is expected to bring heavy to hefty rain.

In the first and second weeks of July, 15 to 50 mm of rain will fall in Punjab and Islamabad, Lahore, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, and Islamabad. The fourth week is expected to bring significant rainfall and the possibility of flooding to DG Khan, Islamabad, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad. Sahiwal, Multan, and Bahawalpur are all predicted to see moderate to heavy rains during this time.

July will bring 30-75 mm of rain to Sindh, Mirpurkhas, Karachi, Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Larkana, and Sukkur districts; moderate to heavy rain is predicted for the second and fourth weeks. The fourth week will see heavy rain in Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Astore District, and isolated places, resulting in significant flooding in rivers and nullahs.

In addition to probable Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) events, these weather conditions may cause landslides in steep places, urban floods, riverine, and flash flooding. District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), and other pertinent departments have received advice from the NDMA to remain vigilant and prepared to handle any emergency.

Local authorities are advised to notify households living along riverbanks of the anticipated rise in water flows while ensuring that necessary equipment and personnel are available in vulnerable places. According to evacuation plans, at-risk people should be evacuated from low-lying and flood-prone locations as soon as possible. Furthermore, residents are urged to take drastic safety precautions, like avoiding electric poles and vulnerable infrastructure and avoiding driving or walking through flooded regions.
