Govt Halts Electricity Tariff Hike For 200 Units

Customers consuming up to 200 power units will be helped between July and September 2024. This action is in response to the federal cabinet’s emergency approval granted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to rescind the fee hike for protected slabs.

It was previously reported that the federal cabinet had authorized raising the basic electricity tariff, fulfilling a significant requirement imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

An average rise of Rs5.72 per unit had been proposed by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), and by July 10th, the federal government was supposed to release a notification.

For a short while, though, the government decided against the hike. Alternatively, about Rs 50 billion will be given to lower the customer tariff.

The monthly cost for lifeline consumers who use up to 50 units would stay at Rs 3.95 per unit. During this time, the tariff for users consuming 51 to 100 units per month will remain at Rs 7.74 per unit.
