PML-N Reassures Utility Stores Will Remain Open

Rana Sanaullah, the leader of the PMLN, has notified the striking workers of the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) that there will not be any layoffs or closures of the utility stores. This promise was provided on August 26 during a late-night meeting with union representatives following the start of employee protests.

Despite assurances by Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain that the USC would just be reformed, the proposal by the federal cabinet to possibly close the institution.

Founded in 1971, the USC runs 4,000 outlets around the country that sell subsidized necessities. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), both of which visited the protest camp and denounced the government’s plans, have also shown support for the workers.

Employees of the Pakistan Public Works Department (Pak-PWD) also staged protests against the department’s proposed shutdown, which was authorized by the federal cabinet on July 10. The National IT Board (NITB), which oversees digital services for government agencies, is also getting ready to be dissolved by the Ministry of IT and Telecom.
