Starbucks CEO Criticized For Jet Commute

Starbucks’s new CEO, Brian Niccol, has faced criticism for his intention to fly a corporate jet about 1,000 miles from his Newport Beach, California, home to the company’s Seattle headquarters. People on social media criticized Starbucks for this by pointing out inconsistencies in the company’s environmental goals and the lifestyles of its senior executives.

Mr. Niccol is scheduled to formally assume the role of CEO on September 9, 2024. According to his work, he will need to commute as needed but is not obliged to move to Seattle. Starbucks has consented to allow him to commute and travel on their corporate plane. A small remote office will also be set up for him in Newport Beach.

It is unclear if Mr. Niccol is subject to Starbucks’ hybrid work policy, which mandates that workers be in the office three days a week at the very least. It takes about eighteen hours to commute by automobile or three hours by plane from Newport Beach to Seattle. There has been criticism of this arrangement, with some doubting Starbucks’ dedication to sustainability.

Particularly in light of the increase in remote work during the epidemic, the argument between remote versus office employment is still being discussed. While some businesses, like tech, have fully embraced remote work, others, like the former, have gone back to full-time office work. Concerns concerning Mr. Niccol’s compensation, which includes a $1.6 million salary and substantial bonuses, are also raised during these talks.

The hiring of Brian Niccol aligns with Starbucks’s efforts to improve operations. Just before joining Starbucks, he doubled sales and expanded operations at Chipotle Mexican Grill while leading the company through a significant recovery. Brian’s leadership at Chipotle is believed to have played a major role in Starbucks’s choice to hire him.
