Senior South Korean and U.S. defense officials met in Seoul today to discuss an updated procedure for countering North Korea’s nuclear threats. These recommendations, a joint declaration following their third closed-door discussion, lay out the ideas and methods for maintaining and enhancing a “credible and effective” nuclear-repellent policy.
North Korea is creating its nuclear weapons and delivery technologies at the same time as the Nuclear Consultative Group conference. Politicians in South Korea, especially senior members of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s party, have proposed that the country develop its nuclear weapons rather than relying entirely on the nuclear umbrella of the U.S. Washington remains opposed to this notion.

This meeting on June 10, 2024, followed up on that agreement. Before the annual submission drills, high-level officials from both Koreas will carry out a simulated tabletop exercise, with the focus being on North Korea’s possible use of nuclear weapons, according to Cho Chang-rae, South Korea’s deputy defense minister for police.
