PTA Prepares Pakistan for 5G and Satellite Internet Revolution

Pakistan’s technology landscape is gearing up for a major leap forward. In a speech at a cybersecurity workshop and awards ceremony, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (Retd) Hafeez ur Rehman said the authority is actively working to roll out 5G services in the country. While acknowledging that China is already talking about 6G, he emphasised the importance of adopting cutting‑edge technologies responsibly and ensuring that cybersecurity and data protection remain top priorities.

According to the chairman, 5G will not come at the expense of citizens’ privacy. He stressed that artificial intelligence is both a powerful tool and a potential avenue for fraud, warning that fake audio and video messages can be used for financial scams. To counter these threats, PTA is conducting third‑party cybersecurity audits of all telecom operators and improving the country’s resilience against cyberattacks, achieving a score of 8.8 out of 10 in the telecom sector’s cybersecurity assessment.

The chairman also revealed that rules for the Pakistan Satellite Internet Regulatory Body (PSARB) are ready, paving the way for satellite internet services in Pakistan. He highlighted that the authority will ensure data sovereignty, secure internet usage, and protection of citizens’ privacy as these services roll out. PTA’s commitment to emerging technologies is part of a broader drive to modernise Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and maintain public trust. With new policies and regulatory frameworks in place, the nation could soon see the arrival of both 5G and satellite internet, bringing faster and more reliable connectivity to consumers.
