No Relief for Pakistan Despite Falling Oil Prices

There is no relief for Pakistan, even though the price of petroleum products has dropped globally.

The Government is considering raising the sales tax and the petroleum charge on petroleum items for the federal budget for 2024–2025.

According to media sources, the petroleum levy might get raised by up to 20 rupees per liter to improve federal revenue. In addition, the Government has suggested a sales tax on petroleum goods for the upcoming fiscal year. The Government is finding it impossible to increase the charge per liter from Rs. 60 to Rs. 80.

According to promises given to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the current fiscal year, the Government receives a petroleum charge of Rs. 60 per liter for gasoline and diesel and set a target of 869 billion rupees for this levy collection.
