This week at WWDC, Apple and OpenAI announced a partnership that will include ChatGPT in the Apple ecosystem. Interestingly, neither company receives payment for this collaboration. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg stated that Apple values OpenAI’s access to hundreds of millions of their devices as highly as financial rewards.
This is not an OpenAI-only partnership. In addition, Apple is discussing offering chatbots from Aanthropic and Google; an agreement for Google Gemini is expected later this year. While iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia will be supported by OpenAI’s GPT-4 model for AI tasks, Apple anticipates providing a range of third-party AI services, just like Safari supports multiple search engines.

Apple expects that people may be lured away from conventional search engines by chatbots and large language models (LLMS). The lucrative contract between Apple and Google, which pays billions to be the default search engine on iPhones, could be affected by this change. Deals, including revenue sharing, might help Apple compensate for this possible loss.

Even though Apple’s AI strategy is still in its early stages, the partnership between Apple Intelligence and OpenAI marks a significant step forward. Next year, Apple plans to add more languages to Apple’s intelligence beyond English. Moreover, Apple is considering partnerships with Baidu and Alibaba to offer chatbot services in China, where access to ChatGPT is forbidden.
